Fictional Adaptation - Brief

During this unit we have to adapt a poem into a short film, we were given a choice of 5 poems, all with a first world war theme. We can't change any of the poet's writing but we can add additional dialog if needed and the poem has to be in the short film in the form of narration, spoken or texts. We then have to create a title sequence with other people also doing the same poem. We can take any form of style we choose and interpret the poem as we want. We are acting at the directer and editor for this unit and must seek assistance for the other roles. This short film must be between 3-5 minutes long.

With this unit I am very interested and excited to get into the filming of a poem and adapt it in a way which I see would fit best with the poem.

The other aspect of this unit is the written assignment, this is a 2000- 2500 word essay and we can base it on 1 of 3 questions.

1: Discuss the views that "with a successful adaptation, the original work is transformed into something new and different, although retaining many traces of what it was formerly" with reference to at least one text adapted for broadcast television.

2: To what extent is it true that "Adaptations of classic texts enable contemporary audiences to re-visit the past; as such they can be situated within the border context of postmodern appropriations of history?" Examine with reference to at least one adapted for broadcast on television.

3: In adapting a novel the adapter inevitably infringes the integrity of the original text - discuss with reference to at least one text adapted for broadcast on television.
