Today we had another workshop with Alex (Professional camera operator and editor). We first listened to him explain to us the must and don'ts for setting up the camera and camera settings; he told us about formatting the camera before we shoot to make sure we have maximum memory life, showed us the right frame rate to be on, saturation and whit balancing. He then went into explaining the exposure settings, he said to first check the shutter speed, as this will give you control over how much light comes into the camera with each frame. F-stops, the further down you stop the better quality, then the ISO, he told us to never go passed 800 ISO or the picture will start to appear grainy.
He then moved on and gave us a task to do in groups of 2, we had to create 3 short 30 to 45 seconds films with each their own genre, one showing the emotion and feeling of happiness, one creating a sadness emotion and one demonstrating a angry theme. We had from 11 till 1 for filming and onwards till 4 for editing. Me and Ruby paired up and used own canon as we wanted to come to full grips with the understanding of setting and feel of the camera. We took off creating the anger short first and did so quite quickly as an idea quickly came into our heads, as I was hungry and there was no food in the canteen yet, so we thought we'd do a short about that.
During the filming we got on and worked well together and easily made the three shorts before 1. We had a few problems in the filming process as in the happy film, I forgot to change the ISO when we went inside, so it looked very dark and grainy. Also we didn't get every shot in full focus, which meant we couldn't use all the shots we wanted. However besides that the filming went very good.
For the editing we broke up the shorts between us as we nth like editing and wanted to get done quicker, I took on the anger film and Ruby did the happy film, as the anger film was quite short, I finished quickly and moved onto the sadness film. Editing went quite smoothly and the only real problems was the sound and sound effects, as they were a pain to find ones that sounded good and to link up to sound real.
With the first film I thought that they could have been a few more shots added to make it complete and making sure that all the shots are in focus. Alex liked it and told us to watch the focusing as a couple of our shots had the focus on the wrong object, I.e. focused on the window and not the character.
For this film, I thought that we could have got more shots out of the small environment, and used the tripod more as some shots were slightly shaky, Alex said the same.
With our last film, theres a duple of things that I would do different if I were to re-create, first make sure all the shots are focused and sharp. Make sure the ISO was on the right settings for the location, I.e. inside higher than outside. I wanted to get more shots of her running around excited and more close ups. Then I would have put a music track for the beginning and/or a better bus track as the one we had was short and repetitive and noticeable.
Overall the workshop was very helpful as we learnt many aspects about filming and editing and camera settings. I learnt to make sure that all shots are focused and have the right settings I.e. ISO, shutter speed, white balance ect.
